Case / 002 — LAB111

One building. Many networks. One infrastructure.

Across a historic, maze-like building, a distributed network supports cinema operations, hospitality, tenants, artists and visitors—without allowing their very different demands to interfere with one another.Visit LAB111 ↗

Built in phases

A network that grew with the building.

The beginning

microdot first became involved in 2016, providing guest Wi‑Fi for the restaurant. Soon afterwards, new management broadened the brief from that initial installation to the building’s wider network, beginning with the cinema’s projection rooms.

The expansion

When the upper floors were reconstructed as tenant offices and artist studios, the network expanded again. Infrastructure planning and cabling were coordinated with the electricians during the renovation, with additional network racks deployed to serve the new spaces.

Infrastructure principle

Connected once. Distributed carefully.

01 / Connect One symmetric fibre connection provides the building’s internet capacity.
02 / Distribute Switches and access points extend connectivity throughout the complex building.
03 / Separate Distinct virtual networks give each operational environment the access it requires.

One managed platform / distributed coverage / separated environments

Logical infrastructure

Shared physically. Separated deliberately.

A single coordinated platform carries several operational environments. Logical separation gives each the connectivity it needs while protecting other users and systems.

01

Business operations

Core administrative, hospitality and staff systems remain dependable during busy periods.

02

Cinema management

A high-bandwidth, protected environment supports digital film delivery and projection operations.

03

Independent tenants

Office tenants receive isolated connectivity suited to their own work and access requirements.

04

Guest and studio access

Visitors and creative studios receive practical connectivity without being exposed to operational systems.

05

High-volume media traffic

The network handles film delivery, uploads, streaming and projection data, including major peaks around animation festivals.

06

Expandable platform

New spaces, users and connected systems can be introduced without rebuilding the underlying network.

Beyond connectivity

The network became the building’s operational backbone.

microdot procured and configured the UniFi environment and continues to manage it, supporting the wider systems that depend on it.

Result

Complexity made manageable.

Better coverage throughout a difficult building
Greater throughput for sustained media workloads
Reliable projection operations
Secure separation between tenants, guests and operational systems
Centralised, easier network management
Capacity to expand in further phases
Greater resilience across critical systems
One accountable infrastructure partner

Client perspective

“We have worked with microdot for ten years. We have a complex network supporting a cinema and many tenants working in film, all of whom rely on a stable and secure network. Josh manages it perfectly. He is very knowledgeable, always quick to respond, always thinking ahead about how things can be improved—and, on top of that, a very nice person to work with. Highly recommended!”
